Recently, I took a trip with my dog to Usedom, an island in Germany that is located at the Baltic Sea. In this post, I will share information on a trip to Heringsdorf.
If you are keen to spend a few days on the island, do check out my post on where to stay in Usedom with a dog – the hotel I stayed at offers a terrace with a gorgeous view. Also, do check out my others posts on walks around Peenemünde and Karlshagen.
THE ROUTE

What I enjoyed the most in Heringsdorf was certainly the walking. It is quite hilly and there were lots of signpointed trails to choose from.
As Heringsdorf is quite close to town of Ahlbeck, you can even walk all the way there in a reasonable amount of time. There is even a treetop path (“Baumwipfelpfad”), but sadly dogs are not allowed there.

In our case, we were only there for half a day, so we chose one of the shorter routes. It ended up being a gorgeous walk through the woods. So good!
The entire trail was well signposted and the paths were easy to walk on. However, it is quite hilly, so some level of fitness is required.
Heringsdorf was a place where I would really have liked to spend more time. I was quite keen to try out some of the longer routes.

Aside from the trails, Heringsdorf of course also has a very nice beach. The sand is very fine here, and the beach is wide. It also features a “Seebrücke” (sea bridge).
Please do note that dogs are only allowed on the main beaches between October and April. If you visit between May and September, please use the designated dog beaches.
WHERE TO EAT
Heringsdorf offers plenty of cafes and restaurants, so you have many different options. Personally, I had a sandwich as well as cake from Junge Bakery – delicious but a little on the pricey side.

For dinner, I would recommend Usedomer Brauhaus – they actually brew their own beer, and yes, you can buy it. Please note that unfortunately dogs are not allowed inside, they do have a “Biergarten” where you and your pup can sit outside though.
You can also get food (and beer!) for takeaway. The Brauhaus makes three different types of beers, so of course I had to try all three. This also makes for a great souvenir!
THE BOTTOM LINE
I really enjoyed Heringsdorf. There are lots of walking routes to explore, along with a nice beach. The town also offers plenty of restaurant and cafe options, which was not always the case in other places on Usedom. If I visit the island again, I’ll try to stay in the Heringsdorf area.
Bonus tip:
Heringsdorf is very close to the Polish border. Lots of things are cheaper there than in Germany. In case that you are traveling by car, it’s probably worth your time to cross the border and fill up your gas tank. If cigarettes or alcohol are of interest to you, those are available much cheaper there as well. Be sure to know how much you can legally take back!
