A trip with my dog to Karlshagen (Usedom, Baltic Sea)

Recently, I took a trip with my dog to Usedom, an island in Germany that is located at the Baltic Sea. In this post, I will share information on walking around the Karlshagen area.

If you are keen to spend a few days on the island, do check out my post on where to in Usedom with a dog – the hotel I stayed at offers a terrace with a gorgeous view. Also, do check out my others posts on walks around Peenemünde and Heringsdorf.

THE ROUTES

In Karlshagen, there are three different ways to walk along the coast:

  • The beach
  • The woods
  • The promenade

Each of these options offers different terrain and views.

I tried all three with my pup, and here is our verdict:

THE BEACH

The beach at Karlshagen.

The beach at Karlshagen is very nice. Wide, and with very fine sand. We also found it very clean and not very busy at this time of year. Gorgeous!

However, when we visited in early March, there was quite a feisty wind. It was warm in the sun, but the wind made it a bit uncomfortable to walk on the beach.

Please note that dogs are only allowed on the beach here between October and April! If you come between May and September, please use the designated dog beaches only.

THE WOODS

The woods – our favorite route.

Out of the three options, we enjoyed the woods the most. So many things to sniff!

The terrain was a bit rugged, and I am not even exactly sure if we were meant to be there, but there were some trails so we gave it a go.

The nice thing about walking through the woods was being in nature, while also being shielded from the stiff wind that was blowing during our visit.

THE PROMENADE

The promenade offers asphalt terrain, so if you have a pram or a mobility device, this may be your route of choice. For anyone else, it’s still a nice option too as tou will pass some cute houses and can still see the woods as well.

Walking along the promenade at Karlshagen.

The main promenade plaza is also a good place to stop for a snack. There’s also a stall selling sausages, bread rolls with fish as well as ice cream. Since you don’t have to go inside to purchase, your dog can stay with you.

You can enjoy your snack directly at the plaza, as there are many different benches to sit on.

THE BOTTOM LINE

I would not go out of my way to visit Karlshagen, but if you are in the area this small town is a nice place to go to for a short walk as well as a snack.

Bonus tip:

The street “Am Maiglöckchenberg” has a few parking spots that are free of charge for 2 hours on weekdays. All you need is a parking disk.
