Where to stay in Usedom with a dog

During my trip to Usedom, I stayed at Halbinsel Resort Peenemünde. Overall, it was a good choice, but there were a few minor things that I did not love. For a full breakdown of my hotel experience, read the review below.

DOG FRIENDLINESS

My dog was welcome here. However, it was asked that she sleeps in her own bed, rather than on the hotel bed. For me, this was not an issue, as I always bring her box with me so that she feels right at home. However, besides the bed there was no space in the room where we could sit together or cuddle, so that was a bit sad.

I did not have breakfast at this hotel, as it was located in a different restaurant / shop outside the hotel. However, my dog could have joined there, as the breakfast place has a terrace where dogs are allowed. So that is a plus!

THE LOCATION

This museum boat is right next to the hotel. Dogs are not allowed on though.

This accommodation is both in a nice place, as well as a little bit in the middle of nowhere.

The hotel is next to a harbor, but besides the one restaurant / shop, there was no option for food anywhere nearby.

And while I was there, that shop closed at 4pm, so if you fancied a snack or a drink later in the evening, you were out of luck.

I came during the off-season, so this might be different during the summer.

My dog enjoying the walk to the hidden beach near the hotel.

Having said that, I still found the location to be fantastic. The view from the terrace was absolutely gorgeous, both during the day as well as during sunset especially. Moreover, there is a nice walking route directly behind the hotel that leads to a small hidden beach. Perfect for walking the dog!

As I mentioned at the top, the hotel is not exactly central. To go to any of the larger beaches or visit other restaurants, you will need a car – or you can use the trainline (Usedomer Bäderbahn) to go from Peenemünde all the way to Zinnowitz. If you do take the train please be mindful that dogs larger than a cat require a ticket and must be leashed and muzzled.

Overall: If you are looking for nature as well as peace and quiet – this is the spot for you. If you fancy going out to restaurants or bars at night or don’t want to depend on your car each day, I’d look elsewhere.

THE ROOM

My terrace at Halbinsel Resort Peenemünde. An absolute highlight.
My dog enjoying the sun on the terrace.

As I often do when available, I chose a room with a terrace so that I could easily take my dog out whenever needed.

This was the best terrace I’ve experienced in a hotel yet. Extremely spacious, and with a roof in case of bad weather. The terrace also featured a table with four chairs, as well as a clothes dryer.

When we visited, we got really lucky:

The weather was great for early March, sunny and warm. Thanks to that, my pup and I spent a bunch of time simply relaxing on the terrace and enjoying the sun and the view.

The bed looks comfy but I found the mattresses to be far too hard. Ouch!

The room itself was good too.

It featured a double bed, a closet, a table with three chairs, a TV as well as a full kitchen.

And when I say full kitchen, I mean full kitchen: Stove, oven, microwave, coffee machine, kettle, fridge, all there. Even a dishwasher and a cooker hood.

The kitchen and seating area.

Very convenient, especially since you really did need to feed yourself, with very limited options nearby.

While the room had everything that we needed, I did feel that the furniture was lacking comfort:

The mattress was far too hard for my taste, I did not enjoy sleeping there and woke up with shoulder pain. The chairs at the kitchen table were really uncomfortable for me too. I ended up taking one of the terrace chairs inside to sit on instead.

I also really would have appreciated a couch or a more comfortable chair to relax with my dog after a long day of activities.

The bathroom was also in good condition, but there was hardly any counter space. A hairdryer was available from the reception upon request, but the reception was not always staffed. Toiletries were missing from my room when I arrived, but I did receive some shower gel later on.

Aside from the lack of comfort, my biggest issue with the room was the curtains. There was absolutely no way to keep the light out, so my pup (and therefore me) woke up before 7am each day. Not exactly the time I would like to get up when on vacation.

Finally, the room was also not that quiet. When people were walking in the hallway outside, it was very (VERY) noticeable. Thankfully, the hotel was not too busy so not many people walked past, but I imagine that this could be more of a problem in the high season. Plus, with the fridge being in the same room as the bed, it was a bit noisy. Overall, still reasonably quiet, but it could have been better.

THE SERVICE

There was basically no service at this hotel. There is no room service, I was not explained anything about the area, and I had to ask for everything: The wifi, the hairdryer, the shower gel… All only available after I asked about it.

Not available at all were snacks or drinks within the hotel itself. This hotel is really more “low frills” than most, but they are upfront about this on their website.

However, the staff was friendly and happy to help when asked, so I did not mind this, especially when considering the price of this stay compared to others. It’s just something to be aware of if service is very important to you.

THE VALUE

For three nights, I ended up paying 248 EUR. Compared to other places that I’ve stayed at along the Baltic Sea, and given that this place had a full kitchen as well as a fantastic terrace, I consider this excellent value, despite the few negative points I made above.

THE BOTTOM LINE

I can recommend staying in Halbinsel Resort Peenemünde with a dog if you are looking for a more quiet place with an excellent view where you can really decompress for a few days. Overall, I’d give it a 4/5. Without the fantastic view, it would be a 3/5 though. Do be aware that the level of comfort as well as the (lack of) service may be different than what you are used to from other hotels.

If I travel to Usedom again, I would probably look to stay in a different location to be closer to a real beach and some amenities. I liked the Heringsdorf area when I visited, so that might be a good place to stay.
