Recently, I took a trip with my dog to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. It is a great starting point for many hikes and also a good base for other day trips such as a walk around Eibsee or even going up to the Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain.
If you are looking to spend a few days in the region, do check out my post on where to stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with a dog – I can recommend the hotel I stayed at. It offers a gorgeous mountain panorama with breathtaking views.
THE ROUTE
This walk starts at Hölzlweg in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and takes you up the mountains to Daxkapelle. Along the way, you will encounter many panoramic views and your pup will have different terrain to explore.

The first stop on the route is the St. Anton church. Don’t let the map fool you: You can reach it by walking through the green area, which is actually a park that takes you up to the church.
Though you shouldn’t enter the church with your dog, there is a small outhouse with a statue of Jesus that you can take a look at if you are interested.

As you walk up, make sure to turn around every once in a while and enjoy the view down to Garmisch! It is certainly worth it.
Having passed St. Anton, continue up the hill and walk past the Landgasthof Panorama as well as the Klettergarten.

You will get into a more mountainous area and eventually you will hit a crossroad. If you wan’t to go to Daxkapelle, stay to the left at the fork and continue walking up the hill.
As you make your way up, you will frequently be rewarded by nice views over the mountains.

There are also plenty of things for your pup to explore. My dog enjoyed climbing different stacks of woods and there are even a few small streams coming down the mountain that she was able to check out. Lots of fun!
One word of caution: My dog enjoyed running around the mountainside, but as we got back from this walk I noticed that unfortunately she had caught a few ticks.

She is not usually prone to this, so it seems to me that this area may have more ticks than usual. So do beware and take precautions if you can!
After a short walk, you will eventually reach Daxkapelle, a small chapel on the mountain.
This is a good place to sit down for a moment, enjoy the view and maybe have a snack.
Then, it’s time to go back down!
HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR
This walk took me around one hour and a half. The walk is a little steep in parts, but until Daxkapelle I would still consider it doable for most people. If you want to continue on after Daxkapelle, it quickly gets a lot steeper. So if you are looking for more of a challenge, do pick one of the other routes that take you further up! There are many waypoints along the mountain to guide you.
THE BOTTOM LINE
This was a nice afternoon walk to get to know the area and enjoy some panoramic views. However, do be aware of the tick situation and perhaps try and keep your pup on the trails instead of letting them roam completely free.
