This April, I took a trip with my dog to Riquewihr, a small town along the wine route in Alsace.
I chose Riquewihr as my base to explore the region as there are many walking routes and hiking trails that connect to other places starting there. It was a great choice for a base as we were able to visit both Ribeauvillé and Kaysersberg through great walks from Riquewihr. I definitely recommend choosing Riquewihr as your base for a trip with your dog along the wine route.
During our time there, we stayed at Best Western Hotel & Spa Le Schoenenbourg. Overall, it was a good choice and I can definitely recommend staying here with your dog. For a full breakdown of my hotel experience, read the review below.
DOG FRIENDLINESS
My dog was overall welcome here, with a few caveats. There was even a little bowl and a treat waiting for her in the room. Very nice!
However, do be aware that dogs are not allowed inside the restaurant which is also the breakfast area. We managed to get around this by sitting on the terrace since we were lucky with the weather. Alternatively, you can also request room service for breakfast.
Also, the hotel asks that you do not leave your pup alone in the hotel unless you are on the premises. No problem for me, but just something to be aware of!
THE LOCATION
The Best Western Le Schoenenbourg is located just outside the old town of Riquewihr, which I actually considered a bonus.

The town gets quite busy with tourists during the day but the hotel area was generally quiet. It also connects directly to vineyards which are perfect for walks with your pup.
Staying in Riquewihr also means that you can explore the town early in the morning or late in the evening when it is a lot quieter but still just as beautiful!
THE ROOM
The room was very nice overall. It featured a large double bed, an open closet with multiple drawers, a table with two chairs, a separate table that could be used as a desk, a minibar, safe, as well as what I am guessing is a baby changing table. It also had a TV as well as a kettle along with complimentary teas and coffees. I always appreciate that!
One thing that I found a bit odd, but no problem: The shower is separate from the toilet. So you have a small room with just the toilet – no sink, and then another room that has the sink as well as the shower. Why? I do not know. It worked just fine, I just wish they had put a sink in the toilet cubicle too. Then I could actually see this separation be a bonus.

The beds were excellent. I slept perfectly. For being quite a large hotel, it was also surprisingly very quiet. 100% enjoyed the room.
THE SERVICE

The service at Le Schoenenbourg was very good. Everyone at reception was friendly and helpful.
They were also happy to accommodate me on the terrace for breakfast and dinner.
During my stay, I also treated myself to a massage at the spa. However, that is probably the one thing at the hotel that I can not recommend. It cost 80 EUR for 45 mins and if I am honest, it felt a little superficial. I’ve had much better, deeper massages that left me feeling great and really alleviated my aches. After this one, I did not feel much different, only oilier. So I suggest that you give that a miss.
THE VALUE
For two nights, I ended up paying roughly 285 EUR. This is on the expenside side for me. However, I enjoyed the stay a lot and the charge includes breakfast as well as parking. Therefore, I still feel that this was good value. The only thing I missed in the room was a balcony with a great view!
The massage on the other hand: Not good value.

Unfortunately, I must say the same about dinner at the hotel. On one of the nights I ate at the hotel restaurant. I ordered a glass of wine (5.50 EUR) and the canneloni (15 EUR).
They were nice enough, but the portion was tiny and no accompaniments were offered. Even the waiter who cleared my plate was surprised that I had not even been served bread, but by that time it was too late. So I would suggest having dinner elsewhere.
THE BOTTOM LINE
I enjoyed my stay at Best Western Hotel & Spa Le Schoenenbourg in Riquewihr. The rooms are great and very comfortable and I would not hesitate to stay here again. However, I cannot recommend the restaurant or the spa. Overall, it’s a 4/5 from me!
