Where to stay in Setúbal with a dog

Recently, I’ve taken a trip with my dog to Setúbal in Portugal. We also took a day-trip to Praia das Bicas and we had a great time.

For this trip, we chose to stay at Hotel Laitau which turned out to be a good choice. The location is great and I found it to be very good value.

If you are looking for a decent place to stay in Setúbal with your dog, I can definitely recommend this hotel. For a full breakdown of my experience, read the review below.

DOG FRIENDLINESS

My dog was welcome here, but I was asked not to leave her alone in the room. Fair enough! She was also welcome to join me at breakfast in a separate section, so as not to disturb any patrons who may not wish for dogs to be present.

THE LOCATION

The hotel is located within about a 10 minute walk to the port of Setúbal along with its beach promenade. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafeterias nearby. I found the location to be very convenient, as we were able to explore everything that we wanted to on foot.

You can park directly in front of the hotel, which is great. There is also a garage available if you prefer to not leave your car on the street.

THE ROOM

The room was decent overall, with a large bed, a closed, a desk and a chair as well as some counter space to put your luggage. The mattress was not the best, but for a few nights it was alright. The bathroom was quite spacious.

There was also a really large terrace with a small table and two chairs which I loved. In fact, this article was written on that terrace! Thankfully, it is shady from around midday, so it is a great place to have a drink or a snack and just enjoy the air and the view.

Another thing that I loved was having shutters in front of the window. That way, the room stayed really dark during the early hours of the morning.

The one problem I had was that the room was not at all sound-proof. I was able to hear people speak in the hallway very loudly, and this was an issue until nearly midnight with people coming back, and then again from around 7am as people started going for breakfast. Not too helpful for a good night’s sleep. If they can improve one thing, that would be it!

THE SERVICE

The service was good. I had a small problem with my car and the hotel staff were very helpful and flexible with the dates of my stay. I received a map of the city on arrival, which I always like. Much appreciated!

Breakfast at Hotel Laitau.

Moreover, I was also able to take breakfast up to my room. While it was not the most amazing, there was a decent amount of choice, including fresh fruit.

One pet peeve: I had the do-not-disturb sign on the door and was sitting on the terrace with my dog. Suddenly, the cleaner came through the terrace door and gave me a scare from behind. She had already been cleaning the room behind us, even though the sign was on the door and we were there! I do not like it at all when the sign is not respected. What is it there for if no one cares?

THE VALUE

At this hotel, I paid a shockingly low 59 EUR per night including breakfast, parking and my dog. In a great location. With a large terrace. I still cannot believe this price. The value is just great.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Overall, this hotel was a good choice. I was only planning to be here for one night, but we ended up staying three nights total. Although it was not the most restful due to the noise and the mattress quality, it was still great value. For a 3-star hotel, this was a really good experience. If you want a more comfortable stay, you will need to pay more than 59 EUR per night, it’s as simple as that. Overall, it’s a solid 4/5 from me.
