Where to stay in Ponferrada near Las Médulas with a dog

Recently, I’ve taken a trip with my dog to Las Médulas, an ancient gold mining site in Spain.

We chose to stay at an apartment in Ponferrada, which is located about a 30 minute drive from the Las Médulas park. Overall, it was a decent choice.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Ponferrada with your dog, this apartment is suitable. However, I would probably choose a different area next time. For a full breakdown of my experience, read the review below.

DOG FRIENDLINESS

My dog was welcome here. However, I think the area itself is not so dog friendly. We struggled to find a good place to go for walks in the surrounding area. Sometimes, there are not even side walks and I could not find any park nearby. Not so ideal.

THE LOCATION

The apartment is located near a small canal, but that is about the only positive thing I can say about the area.

It is not terrible, but I cannot call it nice either. While the apartment building seems quite new, is in good shape and even has an underground parking garage, some surrounding buildings look quite run-down.

Maybe it’s just me, but I got a bit of a shady vibe and was not very happy walking my dog at night on the partially side-walk-less streets.

THE APARTMENT

The apartment itself was nice overall. Very spacious and comfortable.

There are two bedrooms, one is very large, the other one is still decent sized. The bed I used was very comfortable. The living room is also large and features a very big couch as well as a separate dining table and chairs.

In the kitchen, there is absolutely everything that you could need, including a dishwasher. Love it! The bathroom was also comfortably large with plenty of space to keep your things. Moreover, the apartment has a washing machine available which was one of the reasons that I chose it.

There are however also a few things that I did not love:

First off, the apartment was not the cleanest. I noticed this in several areas. It was not exactly dirty, but I’ve definitely had cleaner apartments on my trips too. Second, it is not well insulated. There was quite a lot of street noise coming in, even at night.

And finally: While it is nice to have underground parking, the garage is really quite tight. I spent a lot of time and turns trying to get in and out of the assigned parking space, and my car is not even that big. Maybe I’m just not the best driver though!

THE SERVICE

As it was an apartment, there was of course not much in terms of service. However, the interactions with the host were good. They reached out a few days ahead of time to ask about arrival times and sent me detailed instructions on how to get the key and enter the apartment. When I had a problem locating the key, they responded and helped right away. All good on that side!

THE VALUE

At this apartment, I paid 45 EUR per night. Can’t argue with that price at all. Getting such a large, comfortable apartment with a parking garage for such a low fee is definitely good value in my book. Even though the location was not the best, I felt that the price was more than fair.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Overall, this apartment was a decent choice. The stay was mostly comfortable. Honestly, the only reason that I would look elsewhere next time is the location. Other than that, it was good value with just some minor drawbacks. On balance, I give it a 3/5.
