This December, I took a trip with my dog to the Murcía region in Spain. While we were there, we went to visit the Salinas de San Pedro in San Pedro del Pinatar.

This is an area of saline wetlands where a great variety of birds can be observed. Also, the sunsets are spectacular.
Taking a walk through the Salinas is definitely recommended. Have you ever seen wild flamingos? This is your chance! For more information on this visit, please see the details below.
If you are looking to spend more time in the Murcía region, I can certainly recommend the holiday home that I stayed at. If you’re interested you can find my review here.
THE ROUTE
If you’re coming by car, you can park next to the visitor center and then walk along the Sendero de Corterillo to the main Salinas area. There are also some smaller parking options directly near the bird observatories but these fill up quickly.
The Salinas de San Pedro are a collection of saline wetlands where you can see many different kinds of birds. We spotted flamingos, cormorants, little egrets, many different ducks and other smaller birds. It was interesting to observe them in their natural habitats, happily trotting along and putting their heads in the water to find something to eat. The pictures hardly do it justice because the birds look so small, in person you can see them much better!

From the Salinas, you can also reach the Arenales of San Pedro which is a dune area. Please note that unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the beach here, so we just had a quick look from afar. Thankfully, even staying on the wooden tracks you can take in the beautiful nature that surrounds you.

HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR
Depending on your route and the amount of time you want to spend observing the birds, this can be a short visit or an extended one.

Overall, we spent around one hour walking around the Salinas and the dune area . If you want to go further, I can recommend walking towards El Mojón.
The way towards that area is a trail that goes around the outside of the Salinas area but is still part of the park, so it’s great for a walk with your dog. Also, you might get lucky and meet a little egret on the way as we did.
Unfortunately, dogs are not officially allowed on the beach in El Mojón either but when we came in November the beach was completely empty, so we had a quick look. My dog loved it!
THE BOTTOM LINE
The Salinas de San Pedro are a very nice place to visit with your dog. I would recommend timing your visit such that you can catch a stunning sunset at the end.
