A trip with my dog to the Château de Haut-Koenigsbourg in Alsace

In the fall of 2023, I took another trip with my dog to Riquewihr. We had already visited in 2022 but enjoyed the Alsace area so much that we came back to explore more.

In this article, I will tell you about a short visit to the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle in Orschwiller.

If you are looking for more things to do in the area, do take a look at my other articles from Alsace. Lots of great options in there! If you are looking for a place to stay in Riquewihr, I can also recommend the hotel that I stayed at in 2022.

THE ROUTE

The Château de Haut-Koenigsbourg is a medieval castle in Orschwiller in the Alsace region of France. While there is an official parking lot for the castle, you can also just leave your car alongside the road free of charge.

The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle was rebuilt by the German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II in the early 1900s when Alsace was still part of Germany.

Be aware that dogs are not allowed inside of the castle, but we still found it worthwhile to see it from outside and follow some of the hiking trails that surround it.

Walking along the trails, you will discover the Château de Oedenbourg, a castle ruin located just near the main castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg. As the castle is strategically located in the mountains, you can also enjoy some nice views over the Upper Rhine Plain area.

HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR

We spent just around an hour exploring the surroundings of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle. There are a number of hiking trails that take you further if you are in the mood for more. This visit was just a gentle stroll and easy to accomplish for most people.

THE BOTTOM LINE

This is a nice, short walk to take with your dog around the Château de Haut-Koenigsbourg. If you are in the area, I do recommend making a short stop here, but I would not go too far out of my way to see it.
