In the fall of 2022, I took a trip with my dog to Denmark. During this vacation, we visited the Faxe Kalkbrud limestone quarry on the island of Zealand.
If you are considering to take a trip to Denmark with your dog, you may also be interested in my review of traveling by ferry from Rostock in Germany to Gedser in Denmark with a dog. I can also recommend the hotel that we stayed at in Præstø which is not far from the Faxe Kalkbrud. If you are in the area, you may also enjoy a trip with your dog to the white cliffs of Stevns Klint.
In this article, I will tell you all about our visit to the spectacular limestone quarry Faxe Kalkbrud.
THE ROUTE
There is a parking lot near the museum which is free of charge. From there, you can walk to the quarry site.
There is a guided path through the quarry with many points of information posted along the route and paying attention to those is recommended. Can you believe that the quarry has been used for Limestone production for more than 900 years? I found that fascinating.

The quarry itself is absolutely gorgeous. One of the most special places that I have ever been to. Where else do gigantic heavy machinery, seagulls and gorgeous blue lakes share the same space? My pup had a great time exploring the quarry as well

Originally, the quarry was formed over 63 million years ago, at a time when today’s Denmark was still covered by the sea and coral reefs were growing in this space.
This is why you can still find fossils in the quarry today. Tools are provided for a small fee so that you can go on the hunt for some fossils yourself. You can have your finds evaluated in the museum on-site.
Please be aware that the quarry is still an active work site with heavy machinery and you are entering the quarry at your own risk.
HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR
The Faxe Kalkbrud is a huge space, with the entire quarry covering 110 acres. We spent around 2 hours exploring the limestone quarry but could easily have stayed longer.

Visiting the quarry is suitable for most people. It is highly recommended to wear appropriate footwear as the quarry can get muddy and stairs and paths may be slippery.
Also, while the lakes may look beautiful, the water is alkaline and bathing is absolutely not recommend. Please keep your dogs leashed at all times and keep them clear of the water as well for their own safety.
THE BOTTOM LINE
To me, this place was absolutely stunning. It has a certain raw beauty to it that is hard to replicate or put into words. If you are visiting Zealand with your dog, I highly recommend a visit to the Faxe Kalkbrud quarry.
