In the fall of 2022, I took a trip with my dog to Denmark. During this vacation, we visited the Himmelbjerget, a hill that is located between Silkeborg and Ry which is also known as the Sky Mountain. From the top, you have fabulous views over the Lake Highlands area of Søhøjlandet.
If you are considering to take a trip to Denmark with your dog, you may also be interested in my other articles with things to do and places to stay in Denmark with your pup.
In this article, I will tell you all about visiting the Himmelbjerget area with your dog.
THE ROUTE
We parked at the paid parking lot and started our visit of Himmelbjerget from there.

There are different signposted trails and we chose the red one that goes to the top of the hill first.
According to Norse Mythology, Himmelbjerget is located right next to Bifrost which connects the land of the Gods (Asgård) with that of the People (Mitgård). No wonder that Himmelbjerget is also referred to as the Sky Mountain, right?
The tower on Himmelbjerget was constructed in 1875 to celebrate the first Danish constitution and thereby the end of the prior rule of absolute monarchy.
From the top of 147m tall hill, you have a stunning view over Lake Julsø and the Lake Highlands area of Søhøjlandet. What a beautiful panorama indeed.

After admiring the view, we eventually made our way down the hill through the forest, following the red trail to the water’s edge near the Julsø hotel. Of course my dog could not resists taking a refreshing bath in Lake Julsø.

HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR
We spent around an hour and a half walking around the Himmelbjerget. There are many walking and hiking trails, so if you are looking for a longer visit it is certainly possible. As can be expected, parts of the hilly area are a little strenuous to visit.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The Himmelbjerget was a beautiful stop with my dog during our visit of Denmark. If you are in the area, I definitely recommend visiting the Himmelbjerget. I plan to come back again and spend more time exploring the various trails as the area looked gorgeous.
