A trip with my dog to Egeskov castle in Funen (Denmark)

In the fall of 2022, I took a trip with my dog to Denmark. During this vacation, we also visited the Egeskov Slot, a beautiful park with a castle and gardens on the island of Funen near the town of Kværndrup.

If you are considering to take a trip to Denmark with your dog, you may also be interested in my review of traveling by ferry from Rostock in Germany to Gedser in Denmark with a dog. You may also benefit from my other articles about things to do and places to stay in Denmark with your pup.

In this article, I will tell you all about our visit to the Egeskov castle and gardens.

THE VISIT

Parking at Egeskov is free of charge, but entrance to the park is paid. It cost around 30 EUR for an adult. Please note that leashed dogs are welcome in the gardens but may not enter the castle or the museums.

The park at Egeskov castle is truly impressive. It has 17 different areas to enjoy. Some of them focus on specific plants such as dahlia, fuchsia or roses, while others have themes such as focussing on smell, water, or simply being white.

There were also lots of little details to be discovered. Can you spot the hedge that is shaped like a squirrel? I found it very interesting to see all of them and was impressed by the variety.

Aside from the garden spaces, of course the Egeskov castle is the main star of the visit. Even though dogs are not allowed inside, you can see it from outside from all different perspectives.

Did you know that “Egeskov” means oak forest? Rumour has it that the castle got it’s name because an entire oak forest was used in the construction of the castle’s foundation. Apparently, back in the day the only access to the castle was by drawbridge.

There are also some other buildings dotted around the grounds that used to be part of the workings of the castle back in the day, as well as some newer ones installed for the benefit of visitors.

HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR

We spent nearly two hours walking through the Egeskov castle park. If you are visiting with children, plan in more time as there is also a large playground, a tree top walk and even a maze catering to the young ones.

In my opinion, even though dogs were not allowed in the castle or the museums it was still well worth it to visit the vast gardens and see the castle from outside.

We even got a sneak peak into the oldtimer exhibition as the hall was open on the sides. I wonder what it would be like to drive around in one of these cars?

Additionally, you can bring some flower bulbs home from the on-site shop, which I thought was a clever idea.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The Egeskov castle and park was a very nice place to visit with my dog. While the entry is not cheap, the grounds are very beautiful and to me it was well worth it. If you are traveling through Funen island with your dog, don’t miss this place!
