Where to stay near Externsteine in Horn-Bad Meinberg with a dog

This March, I took a trip with my dog to see the Externsteine, a rock formation located in Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe region of Germany.

During our trip, we stayed in this hotel which was a decent good choice. If you are visiting the area, I recommend a hike up to the Falkenburg castle ruins as well. They were particularly beautiful during sunset.

DOG FRIENDLINESS

My dog was very welcome here. There was no surcharge applied and the room was nice and large so that we both had plenty of space.

THE LOCATION

The hotel is located perfectly if you want to visit the Externsteine rock formation in the Teutoburg forest. It only takes around 15 minutes to walk from the hotel to the impressive sandstone rocks. There are a number of different hiking routes around the area. We followed the shorter “Schliepstein loop” which passes by the “Unterer Teich” pond and loops around to the Externsteine and back again.

Curiously, the origin of the sandstone formation is not precisely known. Normally, it is possible to climb up the rocks for some good views and to visit the grottos that are inside. However during our visit, the rock formation was undergoing some construction. Nonetheless, we had a nice time walking around the area and enjoying the views and the calm.

THE ROOM

The hotel room was very large and comfortable and quite well equipped. It featured a large double bed, a closet, two armchairs, a table, a desk with a chair and even a small refrigerator. This came in very handy, as there is unfortunately no restaurant in the hotel. The bathroom was in good condition but the sink was a bit small and there was not much counter space.

One minor point I would mention is that there was a hot beverage vending machine right outside the door of our room. It made it a little difficult to enter the room with the luggage. But other than that, the stay was very comfortable.

A parking lot was available free of charge just outside the hotel as well.

THE SERVICE

There was no service at this hotel. It was contactless, as we received a code for the main door and a code for the room as well. Throughout the entire stay, I did not have any contact with anyone. I have to say, it was a bit strange. There was not even any light on in the lobby. But everything worked perfectly well.

THE VALUE

We ended up paying around 70 euros for one night, which was decent value. The room was very comfortable, everything worked well and the location was perfect for us.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Overall, this was a good stay. Keeping in mind the excellent location and the decent value, I would rate this hotel stay as a 4 out of 5, even with the lack of service.
