This March, I took a trip with my dog to the Douro valley in Portugal. We had visited this region before and loved our visits to Pinhao and our stay in Quinta do Silval but we wanted to explore a slightly different part of this beautiful area this time.
During our trip, we chose Peso da Régua as our base and stayed in the beautiful Quinta da Estrada winery which was an excellent choice. For a full breakdown of my accommodation experience near Peso da Régua, read the review below.
DOG FRIENDLINESS

My dog was very welcome here. There was no surcharge applied. In fact, she was immediately welcomed by everyone and offered a dental stick.
The owners have a very calm and friendly German shepherd called Rex. He was an absolute sweetheart and showed my pup all the best spots on the vineyard.
Most of the other guests also had dogs with them, so when they say that they are a dog-friendly winery, they really do mean it. Don’t hesitate coming here with your pup. They will have the time of their life!
THE LOCATION
The winery is unsurprisingly surrounded by vineyards. It is absolutely gorgeous. There are different paths in the surrounding area to take your dog for a walk and enjoy the beautiful views of the area. If you are looking for some peace and quiet in nature, in my view the location could not be any better.

Not too far from the winery, you can also find the breathtaking viewpoint of São Leonardo de Galafura. If you’re visiting this region, don’t miss it!
THE ROOM
The room was more like a small apartment with a bedroom area and a separate living room and kitchen.

It was decorated nicely and had everything that I needed. The hosts had even put on the fireplace so that my room would be nice and warm. So kind! While the atmosphere with the fire was very cozy, I felt a bit hesitant about managing to keep it alive myself, so they kindly provided me with a space heater instead.
The best feature of the room was the terrace though. Can you imagine a better spot to have breakfast in the morning?

The one complaint that I would have about the room was that there was another room (“The Loft”) above it. When guests were staying there, it was very noticeable whenever they were walking around. For this reason only, I would recommend you to stay in one of the newer rooms that do not have another space above.
THE SERVICE
The service was truly special. The host family lives on the estate as well and as a guest you really feel like part of the family. I was even invited to dinner to celebrate the birthday of a family member. It was so nice!

Breakfast was also fantastic. There was an option to have it in the room so of course I chose to take advantage of my beautiful terrace.
And by the way, they make great wine too! You can enjoy a tasting and it will surely leave you wanting more. I certainly took a few bottles home with me.
THE VALUE
We ended up paying around 250 EUR for two nights, including breakfast. Of course this is not cheap, but for such a special and hospitable place it felt more than worth it. I would not hesitate to stay here again, although I would choose one of the newer rooms next time.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Overall, this was an excellent stay from start to finish. I felt like my dog and me were so welcome right from the start, and the winery is truly a gorgeous place to unwind. We hope to come back some day. There is no doubt: This place is a clear 5 out of 5.
