This March, I took a trip with my dog to the fabulous Douro valley in Portugal. We had visited this region before and loved our visits to Pinhao and our stay in Quinta do Silval but we wanted to explore a slightly different part of this beautiful area this time.
During our trip, we chose Peso da Régua as our base and stayed in the beautiful Quinta da Estrada winery which was an excellent choice. This winery is located not far from the viewpoint of São Leonardo de Galafura, so of course we had to check it out.
In this article, I will tell you all about our trip to the Miradouro São Leonardo de Galafura.
THE ROUTE
The best way to visit the São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint is by car. You can park right along the road leading up to it just next to the restaurant.
From there, it is just a short walk up to the viewpoint itself. At the top, you will find views so breathtaking that even my pup was too fascinated to look at the camera.
Make sure to walk around to see the view from all sides. The Douro valley below is simply magnificent. This is without a doubt one of my favorite viewpoints ever.
The poet Miguel Torga was right when he described it the views as “slopes, volumes, colours and modulations that no sculptor painted or musician can translate, horizons dilated beyond the plausible thresholds of vision”.
It is beyond words. You must go see it for yourself.
HOW LONG IT TAKES AND WHO IT’S FOR
We spent around 30 minutes here taking in the views from all angles. At the top, there are also some picnic tables, so why not pack a lunch and enjoy the gorgeous views a bit longer?
Since you can even drive right to the top with your car if needed, this viewpoint is very accessible for everyone.
THE BOTTOM LINE
If you are in the area, do not miss this viewpoint. The panoramic view of the Douro valley is truly special and you won’t regret making the trip to see it.
